There is a lot of job satisfaction to be had when working as a Driving Instructor. Not only are you helping the learner driver sat next to you to pass their test, you are also helping to make our roads a safer place for everyone.
Good Habits
Many drivers begin to slip into bad habits soon after they have passed their test and are let loose on the road alone. That is why it is so important to instil good driving habits in the many hours during which they are under your supervision. The key to forming good habits is repetition until it becomes second nature; it is your job as a Driving Instructor to identify any bad tendencies your student has and work to combat them before they take their test.
Modern Dangers
The new generation of drivers are facing dangers that either did not exist or were not regulated against 10 – 20 years ago. The advent of the smart phone, live streaming, social media, music apps such as Spotify and other modern technology has led to new dangers and thus new laws. Aside from the obvious road safety issues, the stiff penalties imposed on the use of mobile phones at the wheel means it is particularly important for new drivers to avoid falling foul of the law. Newly qualified drivers are only permitted to accrue six penalty points before receiving a driving ban and in some instances will be required to re-take their driving test.
Confidence
It is often said that there is nothing worse than indecision when it comes to road users. We have all been stuck between a nervous driver who takes forever to pull out at a junction, brakes too early and is generally unpredictable. Whilst unpredictable behaviour is dangerous in itself, it also breeds frustration in other road users who are then liable to make risky manoeuvres in order to overtake the problem driver. It is your job as a Driving Instructor to ensure that your student is a confident driver. Of course, there is a fine line between confidence and foolhardiness (especially in young drivers); helping them to tread that line can be a challenge.
Favourite Teacher
Many of us can name at least one teacher, or one particular life lesson, that has stuck with us through life. You may not be teaching Geography or Mathematics, but as a Driving Instructor you are a teacher nonetheless. The key difference is that the lessons you teach are about far more than a pass or fail, they can be the difference between life and death for your student, other road users and pedestrians.
